English term or phrase:hooked on hanging ten/dawn patrol
Miami's surf doesn't exactly inspire the sport, but the South Florida tide suits Amy Cobb just fine. The 20-year-old South Carolina native moved to South Beach four years ago to model, but it wasn't long before she was hooked on hanging ten.
"Modeling pays the bills, but surfing is good for the heart," says Amy, whose boyfriend introduced her to surfing and taught her to make the most of Miami's waves doing "dawn patrol." She rises at 6 a.m. and hits the beach by 7, when the tide is best and the waters are empty. "I wasn't going to waste three months of my life in Milan, depressed and starving myself," she says. "I just wasn't into that, so I decided to take up surfing."
Explanation: Hang Ten is a surfer's expression. According to the Surfing guide at About.com, it means: "All ten toes on the nose. Gotta be on a log to do this one." Whatever!... Dawn Patrol -- dawn's the time for the best waves, isn't it? So...
Explanation: Hang ten literally means someone who stands with all ten toes hanging over the front end of the surfboard. A position that makes control difficult in the extreme, therefore only an experienced and very capable surfer can do it. I would translate hooked on hanging ten as loca para hacer surfing because that phrase communicates the same information about her as the English. It does not appear that the reference to hanging ten is literal here.
As for dawn patrol, these are indeed folks who get to the beach at or near sunrise to catch the best waves. I might say ya surfeando a la madrugada to emphasize that she is so devoted to the sport.
This is what I would be trying to convey if I were talking to my surf buddies from Huntington Beach.
