The company, a “big small” company according to Mr X, clearly wants to become a global force rather than a regional one and if it can do this by being innovative and different to the rest of the pack, then all the better.

Explanation:
así me suena natural, verás si va bien con el contexto. Y si el contexto lo permite, puedes agregar "en expansión" (aunque eso no está en la pregunta).
Y si no quieres usar pequeña, puedes decir una gran compañía regional.
