English to Spanish translations [Non-PRO]
English term or phrase: to throw the baby out with the bathwater
"...we react violently against the old belief systems and consequently throw the baby out with the bathwater"
Patricia
Spanish translation:actuar con un exceso de celo, exagerar, etc.
Explanation:
"actuar con un exceso de celo, exagerar, pecar por carta de más, pasarse, quemar el trigo con el rasero.
Ejemplo: Clean the room but please don´t throw the baby with the bath water. Daddy is still reading those magazines to see around. Traducción: Limpia la sala, pero no te extralimites. Tu padre todavía no ha terminado de leer las revistas que hay por aquí".

Both the definitions and the examples are taken from this book: Diccionarios y modismos ingleses y norteamericanos. Alfonso Torrents Dels Prats. Editorial Juventud. 1997. Barcelona.

I highly recommend this author's books, especially "Diccionario de dificultades del inglés".

I hope it helps.

echar la casa por la ventana

Explanation:
This old saying is about as close as you can come with an idiom.
Sorry, I have no reference, but you should find it in about any book of Spanish idioms.

reaccionar en exeso

Explanation:
Funny, I just tried to describe this idiom to a workmate. This is pretty much what it means. You're so determined to get rid of the bathwater you forget there's still a baby in it..........losing sght of the real problem .......overreacting. (reaccionando exesivamente) Hope this helps! Good luck!

tirar el agua con el niño dentro

Explanation:
I have actually heard this expression in Spanish (Spain), "tirar el agua con el niño dentro".

I don't know if the register of your text will allow this, but this is definitely the most loyal translation of the expression that exists (as you can see, it is practically literal).

You can find it in use at the link below.

Un saludo.
