Hace un rato hemos contestado como traducción de \"aardvark\" la expresión \"oso hormiguero\".

Serge L. me ha enviado una nota en la que disentía de dicha traducción y prefería utlizar \"cerdo hormiguero\". Creo que es más correcta. Es posible que, tanto en tu caso como en el mío, te hayas dejado llevar por unos dibujos animados que ponían hace unos años en la TV.

An African Original

Its name beginning with two “A”s, the aardvark is commonly the first animal listed in dictionaries, ranking ahead of aardwolf. Its name is probably one of the most common Dutch words in the English vocabulary. Dutch?


Dutch settlers known as Afrikaans colonized South Africa, where they dreamed up the name aardvark, meaning “earth pig.” With no close living relatives, scientists placed the aardvark in its own family (Orycteropodidae), in turn the only family in the order Tubulidentata. Its scientific name is Orycteropus afer.

The aardvark is sometimes called an “ant bear.” However, that name seems to be perpetuated by dictionaries and word games more than popular usage.

Distribución: Desde el sur del Sahara hasta el Cabo de Buena Esperanza.

Habitat: Zonas de vegetación despejadas y áridas o en ambientes casi desérticos.

Descripción: Coloración pardusca por la parte superior y rojiza por la parte inferior. Extremidades anteriores con 4 dedos y posteriores con 5, todos ellos provistos de grandes uñas que le sirven para excavar.

Son animales solitarios, temerosos. Tienen el olfato y el oído muy desarrollados. Se alimentan de insectos (termitas) que capturan por la noche excavando hoyos con las uñas, e introduciendo su larga y viscosa lengua en los termiteros. Su habilidad para cavar una madriguera es muy grande y, cuando se ve perseguido, penetra en la tierra y se esconde. Si su enemigo lo descubre, se defiende con gran energía.
