My translation: Puede que su niño se encariñe con un libro a medida que tenga más edad.

Can I use encariñar here, or does that not apply to inanimate objects such as a book.

Ummm, encariñarse sí que se puede usar con libros y otros objetos, pero precisamente eso, "objetos". Yo creo que aquí se está hablando de una obra publicada, tenga el formato que tenga, no es el objeto físico por lo que la persona siente predilección, sino por **el contenido* de la obra creada por el escritor.
Mi sensación es que encariñar es más bien a objetos materiales.
