'Brownfield' land is an area of land or premises that has been previously used, but has subsequently become vacant, derelict or contaminated. This term derived from its opposite, undeveloped or 'greenfield' land. Brownfield sites typically require preparatory regenerative work before any new development goes ahead, and can also be partly occupied.

Explanation:
La EPA llama a los "brownfields" sitios contaminados: http://www.epa.gov/swerosps/bf/pdf/lawspn.pdf. Aunque también he visto solarios degrados o ruinas industriales, dependiendo del tipo de "brownfields" de que se esté hablando.

Con los "greenfields" también pasa lo mismo. Si son lugares que se restauraron, se les conoce así, pero también como reservas ecológicas, sencillamente áreas verdes, o luares que no han sido desarrollados previamente. Ojo, no hay que confundirlas con un tipo de inersión que también se denomina así en inglés. Por ahora no encuentro referencias adecuadas para "greenfileds" en Internet, pero seguiré buscando.
