English term or phrase: the sonobuoy is pinging, the sonobuoy is dipping
it means that a sonobuoy (device to detect submarines) is transmitting its search signal. I got two words, ping and dip, the action seems the same, but the words are not used randomly, so there must be a difference between them.

Explanation:

Explanation:
sonobouy = sonoboya
dipping = descendiendo, hundiéndose, sumergiéndose

From a Spanish web page on SONAR [Google's cache of www.interbook.net/personal/lcandelas/person.htm]:

pinger = A device used underwater to produce pulses of sound, as for an echo sounder. [The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition]

Here are some excerpts from an English web page on sonobuoys [http://sonobuoy.crane.navy.mil/sensors.htm]:

Once a sonobuoy hits the water, it descends approximately 40-60 feet underwater until its battery is activated by the sea water which causes a CO2 bottle to inflate a plastic float . The plastic float returns the sonobuoy back to the surface where the attached uplink antenna becomes energized and the hydrophone is released to its pre-assigned depth. (...)

After several hours of operation, the sonobuoy battery fails and water-soluble seals dissolve which allows the sonobuoy to sink to the bottom. All sonobuoy material is non-toxic and is carefully specified per international, federal, and local regulations to prevent any type of adverse environmental impact.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Command Activated Sonobuoy System, or CASS, was later developed. The CASS sonobuoy required a radio command signal from the ASW aircraft before it could start "pinging". With radio commands, the acoustic pulse characteristics could be modified or controlled as necessary for the given situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dipping sonar sensors, or "dunkers", are retrievable sonar devices that are deployed from some naval ships or ASW helicopters. The dipping sonar device, or "ball", can provide both passive and active sonar detection of submarines. Normally, they are used in the active mode which generally provides longer ranges as compared to active sonobuoys.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope that helps some!
Terry
"la sonoboya está emitiendo sonidos, la sonoboya se está sumergiendo
Explanation:
The fact is that the sonobuoys emit sounds when they detect a body, also, when they are being submerged, so the sound received can be confusing, that may be the significance of the two terms used, just to establish the difference.
Luck!
