English term or phrase: I have opened up a can of worms
I want to know the Swedish equivalent (to open up a can of worms = to get into a subject area that is complicated, difficult, and/or controversial, one that, like worms freed from the confines of a can, would be difficult to get back under control.) I would also like to know the literal translation in Swedish.

Swedish translation:"Jag har öppnat/råkat öppna en birk med maskar" -literal
Explanation:
I can't think of a parallell saying.
There is "jag har trampat på/hamnat i
ett getingbo" ("I've stepped on/gotten into a wasp's nest")- but here the connotations do also convey hostility
and danger to the one who has opened
something. A rough approximation could be "jag har släppt allt möjligt löst",or some such. Perhaps someone else knows better. Good luck.
better.

Jag har hamnat i en riktig härva

Explanation:
or maybe "Jag har trasslat till det ordentligt för mig", meaning something like "I'm in a real mess, I've made a real mess of things, I'm in over my head". There is no real parallell idiom, maybe "Jag har släppt helvetet löst" (let all hell loose) or something more in line with Pandoras box (Pandoras ask, in Swedish). Literally it would be "Jag har öppnat en maskburk".
