Explanation: I don't think I've had to give three answers to catch the glitch before..
But reading your text closely, I now see the obvious; your sought word, and indeed the entire text is about paving construction. My previous answers were close but not correct in this context.
"Screeds" means the machine that is actually "rolling out the surface" - asphalt mostly - in Swedish that is 'asfaltläggare' or just 'läggare', there are even hjulläggare and bandläggare - see these Swedish references:
