Agriculture / plant use value
Finnish term or phrase: hyötyviljelykset
I'm translating a text on garden design:

Vaikkei alue ollut vielä varhaisvaiheessa varsinainen maatila, niin puutarhamaisina erityispiirteinä olivat puiston laaja omenatarha ja hyötykasvien näyteviljelykset.

The word I'm wondering about is hyötykasvi. The dictionary offers "useful plant" and there is even a Hyötykasviyhdistys" (they call themselves in English The Association of Useful Plants), but searching websites I get the impression that in the English-speaking world the term refers more to activities in permaculture, that is, natural ecologies. The Finnish essay I'm dealing with clearly refers to a situation of growing crops that one can eat oneself but using industrial farming techniques and mechanisation. Any suggetions?

You're asking a number of different questions here. This answer addressed the context of the sentence you give. I would side with your dictionary on hyötykasvi. I think this term needs to be an exact opposite to the word "weed", and I can still hear my mother telling me to only pull the weeds, not the "plants" (even though weeds are of course plants as well...).
