French term or phrase: retour à vue
Retour à vue sur le terrain de départ en cas de panne moteur.

J'ai pensé à "on-sight return", mais je ne trouve pas d'exemples associés à l'aviation.

Merci.

turn back maintaining VMC

Explanation:
This is what I was instructed once while departing on an instrument flight and my transponder stopped working.

VMC = Visual Meteorological Conditions = the actual weather conditions that allow flying visually (= in good weather)
VFR = Visual Flight Rules, the rules that apply when you fly visually under VMC.
IFR = Instrument Flight Rules, flying by your instruments, in any weather

So I was asked to make sue that the conditions under which I would be flying were according to VMC.

I know the term VFR is often used in these cases instead of VMC, but it is strictly speaking wrong: it should definitely be VMC: you could fly IFR under VMC which would still comply with the instructions.

neutral  philgoddard: Not sure if I've understood this correctly, but it seems to imply that you have control over the weather conditions.

neutral  Drmanu49: I am also a pilot and I would not use maintaining VMC! A vue means not using instruments.
