à partir de l'Egypte, le palanquin n'était pas vide puisqu'il transportait l'étoffe destinée à recouvrir la Kaaba...
(p. 423) Comme cela m'intéressait, voici ce que j'ai compris :
avant l'Islam, les tribus arabes portaient en procession à dos de chameau leurs bétyles (des pierres sacrées) recouvertes d'une sorte de tente en cuir. Quand, avec l'Islam, la pierre noire a été encastrée / fixée dans le mur de la Kaaba, ce chameau spécifique faisait toujours partie de la caravane du pélérinage, mais sous le palanquin, il n'y avait donc plus de pierre. Cependant, le chameau avec son palanquin vide restait symboliquement tout aussi important ; en plus il montrait que le Sultan protégeait le pélérinage.
