French term or phrase: 3 points below:

Sorry for putting all these on one post, the system is really slow at the minute. Thanks again...I'll been awarding huge amounts of Kudoz tomorrow. Claire

Explanation:
1) "Conflicts were inevitable, given the physical conditions under which most Germans were living…"
or: "Given the physical conditions under which most Germans were living, conflicts were inevitable…"

2) "The originality of the Weimar Republic is generally thought to have sprung from the play of intense rivalries that characterized it, and from experiences of all kinds - in the arts as well as in daily communal life…" [or, simply, "everyday life," because the ballistic economic inflation of Germany in the twenties pretty much forced people to live in relatively close groups, in cities as well as in the country]

3) "Consider, for example, the Bauhaus. Continually under fire, it nevertheless invented an architectural style, useful objects, and shapes that are part of our everyday life." [or "...daily environment."]

Explanation:
1. ne pouvaient qu'etre favorisé = were bound to be encouraged/furthered...

You could probaly even move away from that a bit to say something such as : confilts were bound to flourish

= just as well, just as easily). Thus,
in both the arts and in daily communal life. (Is that the bit you meant?)

3. Bauhaus, for example, who was attacked unrelentlessly, invented a type of arhcitecure, everyday objects, forms which have become part of our everyday environment.
(I think I saw a Bauhaus chair in the MOMA in New York?)

Good luck.
