Explanation:
Al-Andalus was the Moslem-dominated territory of Spain AND Portugal, which varied in geographical extension from 780 to 1498, reaching as far as the borders of Catalonia but never really penetrating into Asturias or the Pyrenees. Modern Andalusia takes the name today since the greater part of that extension is in Andalusia, but it also included Murcia, Albacete, Valencia (see El Cid) not to mention Gibraltar, the name of which comes from Jabal-Tariq (Tariq's mountain), the beachhead of the Islamic invasion. There is not really any modern word for this geographical extension, but the natives were refered to as "Andalusís" in Arabic.

Most properly, "al-Andalus" (predating Hispanic Andalusia)...

"Here, Antonio Muñoz Molina recounts the story of Cordoba and al-Andalus in the time of the Ommaid dynasty, from the Muslim conquest in 711 up through the civil wars at the beginning of the eleventh century."

"Ommaid" can also be spelled "Omayyad" in English, although the version without the 'y's is currently preferred.

Explanation:
To agree with Heathcliff: the problem here is the transcription from Arabic, which is not the same alphabet as ours. Omeyyad is also transcribed as Umayyad, which is the pronunciation in the original (southern or Saudi, Mecca Arabic) although the Syrians, who are the people concerned (the caliphate of Cordova was founded by a Syrian descendent of this dynasty), accept Omeyyad. The doubling of the "y" is the way its written in Arabic and the way they pronounce it. Egyptians accept both. That accounts for the 3 main centers of the Arab standard.
The main idea is, that al-Andalus in its heyday included Lisbon, Algarve, Fatima, Burgos, Zaragoza and Aragón. This is thousands of square kilometers more than modern Andalusia.
Modern Arabs accept al-Andalus, since its no more than a history which has disappeared.
