Hi,

This is from an article (in Spanish) about Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) apparently when he entered Bruges there were lots of these. What are they? processions?

Explanation:
I found it! Your Spanish text had a mispelling: it is actually *Joyeuse Entrée*. It is a charter granted to the subjects of the Duchy of Brabant by the duchess Jeanne, in order to be able to marry Wenceslas the 1st [do you suppose this is the "good king Wenceslas?] This charter was imposed as a precondition on the mariage by the Brabançons, who feared interference from Jeanne, an outsider.

You would not, of course, translate *Joyeuse Entrée*, as it was not translated in the Spanish. I have copied the beginning of the text for you, below. The preceding explanation is a summary of same.

La Joyeuse Entrée dans le Brabant
Né à Prague et décédé au Luxembourg, fils du roi de
Bohème, Jean l'Aveugle, et frère de l'empereur de
Germanie Charles IV, Wenceslas 1er devint duc de
Luxembourg et accéda au duché de Brabant par son
mariage avec l'héritière Jeanne. La Joyeuse Entrée
est le nom de la charte octroyée par la duchesse
Jeanne le 3 janvier 1356 aux Brabançons afin de
conclure ce mariage. Ces derniers, craignant

Thanks so much. I was going to leave it in the original anyway... but I wanted to make sure that I understood what it was about. In this particular case it was the "Coming of age" of Charlie that was being celebrated.

and YES... that Wenceslas is indeed "The Good King" of the Xmas carol. But the Polish pronunciation wouldn't scan with the English song. Funy how bits of history are all that remain in the popular imagination. For a royal I suppose he mustn't have been such a bad one, eh? :-)

Explanation:
Thanks to Yolanda, we are all the wiser for her answer. The expression is used in a modern day (Belgian) context, so I suppose this must be something all Belgian children learn about at school.

My gut feeling is, like Yolanda, that it should not be translated, particularly as in your Spanish text it was left if French. Never the less on the site given my Yolanda, there was an English language version which HAD transalted it to "Merry Entrance". I still think it should be left as is.

Une Joyeuse Entrée est une cérémonie solennelle tenue, au Moyen Âge et pendant l'Ancien Régime, lors de la première visite d'un monarque régnant, prince, duc ou gouverneur dans une ville, au cours de laquelle les privilèges de la ville étaient confirmés ou octroyés.

Les joyeuses entrées sont une sorte de présentation des nouveaux souverains aux villes, qui donnaient lieu à des réjouissances et des fêtes. Les nouveaux souverains devaient prêter le serment de respecter la coutume de la ville. Ces fêtes se traduisaient par un parcours bien précis dans la ville, où toutes les corporations de métier, tous les organes administratifs, devaient se mettre en spectacle. Cette cérémonie a été particulièrement importante dans le duché de Brabant et le comté de Flandre et plusieurs villes de Belgique ont ainsi de nos jours une avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée.
