French term or phrase: le champ de l'espace
It is used in connection with the comparatively empty upper half of Raphael's painting, the Transfiguration. Am I right in thinking that it is the equivalent of the English "sea of space"?

English translation:The sea of space
Explanation:
You are right. You could have a couple of alternatives such as 'the sea of space' or 'the field of space'. I felt the latter might also be appropriate.

You could check up paintings by Raphael on www.artchive.com Its an excellent site for art lovers.

Art, especially surrealism, is a constant preoccupation.
