In the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the vanquished party, a Great Vizier is said to have addressed the victor, the "baile de Venise".

Don't worry about the Battle. I have got the story straight, I think. I just need to find out waht term can be used to describe the function, mayorlike, I understand, for the Ventian leader. Is it the same as "doge"?

This ought to be easy but someone somewhere might know as I have spent ages looking for it and cannot find it.
