French term or phrase: au fond de l'impasse Volkswagen...
In full: A moins que ce ne soit voulu : on comprendrait que Renault ne soit guère tenté de se retrouver au fond de l'impasse Volkswagen... How do you like: 'Unless that was intentional, as you would hardly expect Renault to be eager to find itself boxed-in Volkswagen’s cul-de-sac...? Is it close enough? Dave

English translation:to go down the same road as VW
Explanation:
I don't know much about cars, but I have a hunch what they are saying here is that though the Clio design may have changed a lot over the years, this was probably a smart move from Renault who have been able to adapt to new market conditions.
Anyhow, even without understanding what they truly mean, I think it's same to say that Renault "would not be eager to go down the same road as VW."

You're welcome, Dave. Glad to be of help. I know you're sleep deprived, stressed and probably on a tight deadline, but I do feel that I should mention for future reference that according to Kudoz rules you're supposed to leave a question open for at least 24 hours. Yes, that sounds good. Not that I knew before but VW has been having some hard times recently so that's what it means. Thanks Natasha.
