In a way, it could also refer to goods up for sale at any shop.

You have given the additional word 'hypermarkets'. That really sets me thinking on this subject further. If you are referring to 'hyperreality', that is postmodern reality or reality on Internet, then, in that context, the term should acquire very different connotations.

In the wider sense, even if you refer to a supermarket, then everything is a good/item waiting to be sold.

The various connotations of language here are quite fascinating.
