câble fil à fil
pin-to-pin

Explanation:
Colin may well have come up with the right answer with his suggestion, but I just wanted to give another possible alternative.

I suspect what it may in fact mean (which is prettyy sloppily expressed by 'fil à fil') is simply that this cable is wired up with all pins connected to their corresponding pin on the other connector; in other words, pin 1 connects to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2... right up to pin 9

This is quite likely to be a sub-miniature D-type connector, even though the number quoted seems to be a little awry from this (usually SUBD) with 9 pins

I believe that a wire-to-wire cable is actually something rather different, and I'm not sure that is applicable here.

Here\'s just one of many Googles describing such an arrangement:

By International Communications

... not necessary to use the ITT part, any 9-pin sub-D connectors can be ... If a longer cable is required, manufacture a cable with pin-to-pin Continuity. ...

www.intcomgrp.com/pages/manuals/Cordless.pdf

Note that a 9-pin sub-D cable is quite a likely bet for such an application as yours, so that slightly adds weight to my hunch! Do you have any other part nos. or anything like that to go on?

It\'s perhaps worth adding that it is quite important to specify pin-to-pin wiring, as other configurations are commonly used too. For example, one of the most common is what is usually referred to as \'mirror\' wiring, where pin 1 goes to pin 9, pin 2 to pin 8, and so on. Hence when specifying a cable, it is not only important to specify the connectors on each end of it, but also the correspondence between their connections; this is of particular relevance in cases where the same type of connector is used at each end, since in this case (particualrly with a M - F cable), the most logical type of connection to expect would indeed be \'pin-to-pin\' or \'straight-through\' wiring.

Do note that Colin\'s first 2 references in fact refer to a different principle, and the 3rd and 4th are in fact the same product, and from a foreign site to boot! Also, it is not clear whether this is in fact referring to the same thing or not; so just watch out!

You may not be sure, but I am!

A quick Google on \"pin-to-pin\" + \"sub-D\" (a plausible possibility for the connector) yielded no less than 159 refs. , at least some of which seem highly relevant.
