Discussion

Non-ProZ.com May 28, 2005:
No, but the play on words is very good and I don't think it's bad writing. Au contraire...it's quite witty, don't you think :-)
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) May 28, 2005:
I really don't think that proof of pudding can be frogs legs etc. That really doesn't work in English..sounds like bad writing..
Non-ProZ.com May 28, 2005:
Suezen, I am so sorry! Let me see what I can do.
suezen May 28, 2005:
Hello Nathalie ... the proof of the pudding is the answer I gave you!!!
Non-ProZ.com May 26, 2005:
Here it is Angela:
"Dcompose en 6 squences de saveurs, ... la vingtaine de plats de sa carte arbitre les lgances dans un mlange la fois souple, savant, technique et glamour."
Angela Dickson (X) May 26, 2005:
What's the previous sentence? The 'en' refers back to it, so it would be helpful to know.

Proof of this is frogs legs [x, y, z ]

Proof of that comes from or x,y and z are proof of that

witness will not work here...
Peer comment(s):

agree Dr Sue Levy (X) : As proof, frogs legs... lamb chops...

disagree GILLES MEUNIER : witness is correct

Yes Gilles dictionary wise but not writing and stylistics wise..it does not sound "good"
agree Christopher RH : Absolutely correct, but not exactly free-flowing. I would like to "half-agree" here but it isn't an option!

I think that the proof of the pudding is in the frog's legs sounds like comedy central ..actually, pudding and frog's legs is kind of yucky sounding to my ears..

Observe

"Witness" works but "observe" may be a better choice for this kind of document (sounds less legalistic).
Peer comment(s):

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : Observe is good..witness is not

disagree Christopher RH : "en temoigne XXX" means that XXX is a demonstration of the preceding statement, not that we should observe XXX

This is a restaurant so they're saying that if you try the different dishes, you'll see how classy they are.
On the other hand you could always go for something like: the proof of the pudding is in the frogs legs ...!
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : well, your answer was used, even if it wasn't chosen. consolation prize?
