French term or phrase: tube Bergman
Hello,

It is in a preparation report for dismantling an electrical installation.

The sentence is "Démontage de tous les tubes Bergman dans les vides de construction". Bergman is also used as "tuyau Bergman" and "Pipe de Bergman".

I have found that it is a very old type of pipe but I don't know if Bergman is actually used in English.

Thanks for your help.

Bergmann conduit
Explanation:
It is indeed very old; nineteenth-century, in fact. I think it should be called Bergmann conduit, but with a double n, in honour of the inventor, Sigmund Bergmann. He was quite a man: one of the great pioneers of electricity. Here's his American patent for his conduit (or one of them), granted in 1898:

There's a photo of some "tube Bergman" here:

But there is also a sprinkling of references to Bergmann conduit in English, and even the odd picture:

"There is Bergmann conduit made out of thin brass with a paper insulation and a tool to bend it."

"My oldest conduit is made out of wood, followed by Bergmann conduit (brass with paper isolation inside)"

"Bending tool for Bergmann conduit. The top jaw makes the indents, the round bottom part shapes the bend."

"It even works with wires inside Bergmann conduit (Orangeburg pipe with a thin outer coating of sheet metal, not earthed) in plastered brick walls."

agree  Tony M: I had this sneaky feeling there was something American about this...

-> Thanks, Tony! Well, yes and no; he was an American citizen when he got the patent, but he was born and died in Germany. There's a street in Berlin named after him. He worked with Edison in New York, and Robert Bosch started out working for Bergmann.
