French term

sécurité sanitaire

French to English Science Government / Politics Title
The context is the name of a government agency. Most of the time "scurit sanitaire" is translated by either safety or health, or sometimes security. But I need to find something that integrates both ideas, safety and health, in a single word. I know I'm probably asking for the moon! Sorry I can't give more info, but the subject is kind of confidential.
Change log

May 10, 2010 16:03: Stéphanie Soudais (X) changed "Term asked" from "scurit sanitaire" to "sécurité sanitaire"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Rosa Paredes

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

philgoddard May 10, 2010:
This is like getting blood out of a stone! The agency is called the Agence nationale chargée de la sécurité sanitaire de l'alimentation, de l'environnement et du travail, and it was established in January. I've lost interest in this question - someone else can answer it.
Dana Pottratz (asker) May 10, 2010:
It's a new one that doesn't exist yet. It will deal with food, environment and occupational safety
Philippa Smith May 10, 2010:
agree with Gilla Just what I was about to post: "health & safety" is what such an agency would be called in English I'm pretty sure, and don't think you're going to find just one word.
philgoddard May 10, 2010:
I'm assuming that this is either "agence française de sécurité sanitaire", which is a generic term for several bodies, or one of three of these bodies which have "sécurité sanitaire" in their names. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agence_française_de_sécurité_sa...
But we can't provide any proper suggestions unless you tell us which it is - as Writeaway says, you're not giving away any confidences!
writeaway May 10, 2010:
unfair to make people guess. if it's a government agency and not part of the French securité nationale, how confidential can it be if it's being asked as a Kudoz question on the www.
Evans (X) May 10, 2010:
one word is a tall order I'm sure the standard term is "health & safety". Said so commonly together, they almost are one word!
Dana Pottratz (asker) May 10, 2010:
I don't have a context. It's simply part of the name of a government agency which I need to translate (It has no official translation in English)
philgoddard May 10, 2010:
We need some context, please, ie at least one full sentence. You don't have to give away any confidential information.

health and safety

Well, in the light of your new context, and the other contributions, I think this is the only way to go; true, the remit of this dept. seems slightly broader than traditional H1S as we interpret it in the UK; but I think this is the nearest you'll get, and I really can't imagine why you feel a one-word solution is necesary or even desirable, given that even the s/t uses 2 words.

I'm afraid 'health safety' is a nonsense in EN, and might even convey a wrong idea: 'the safety of healthcare services', for example:

You might consider H&S, as a neater solution, one it has been explained the first time.
Note from asker:
Yes I agree, but I'm not deciding alone! And what is s/t by the way? (I'm not British ;)

Thanks, Phil! Not 'lazy'— just uncharacteristically concise ;-)

safety

As far as I know all the French agencies of 'sécurité sanitaire' are for something specific [food, environment, abor or health products]. The term 'safety' is generally enough to convey the meaning.

You said you wanted a single word.
Peer comment(s):

agree Chris Hall : Much Ado about Nothing, Barbara, the Asker seemed unwilling to help us out.

Thanks Chris. Now that context has finally been wrung from the Asker, it looks more like "food safety".

Health and sanitation security

It seems that "sanitaire" cannot be limited to "health", and should include the collective "sanitation" component.
And security is more widely and commonly used than safety.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : But I think that may introduce an unwanted extra element, since 'sanitation' is actually (one of the translations of) 'assainissement' in FR.
5 mins
neutral Chris Hall : I would NOT use "sanitation" here.
