Thanks Jonathan. I used your solution in two instances. "Societal choice" struck me as a good (and shorter) solution, but as less idiomatic. Many instances of uses of the expression "societal choice" on the internet contradict Jane's opinion of it. Anyway, I digress: thanks Jon et al.
