Social Sciences - History
French term or phrase: devoir d'histoire / devoir de mémoire
From a French historian, meaning the past must be remembered ("devoir de mémoire") but not changed for political or ideological reasons ("devoir d'histoire").

The "need" (?) / "duty" (?) to remember - but what about the history bit?

I'd be interested to hear how native speakers would say this - and any UK/US difference?

Many thanks in advance.

Explanation:
I would certainly opt for "duty of remembrance" for "devoir de mémoire", but perhaps a suggestion to avoid long paraphrases might be: the duty to respect memory vs. the duty to respect History.
I look forward to suggestions by native speakers, though!

Explanation:
this is an interesting item, and thanks for producing it. I would be tempted to unpick the ideas contained in these elliptical phrases and suggest one possible way of doing this.
