French term

législation sociale

French to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)
Relates to the section on the staff that will be used to carry out the services within a Contract for the Provision of Services. I'm thinking this actually means employment/trade legislation and not social legislation - can anyone confirm?

Discussion

X2010 May 21, 2010:
Hello Suzi By definition, I'd say "social legislation" is enacted ultimately for the benefit of society as a whole - to share out the work load and employment opportunities accordingly (make society a better place to live in). So I see nothing wrong with a literal translation. But I do agree, generically, with Phil and Polyglot's renditions. Best of luck with your translation. It's not always easy.
Suzi Griffiths (asker) May 21, 2010:
X2010 and Phil you have both been very helpful. I am thinking about using your suggestion in part x2010 but I really need to know how confident you are about the social legislation bit. Still thinking employment legislation may be better... please comment
X2010 May 21, 2010:
my understanding it's really just "social legislation" as you first suggested. These are the laws governing RTT (réduction du temps du travail) or regulating (régularité) the authorized working time. In France, it can be illegal to work beyond the statutory time limit. "la législation sociale en matière de régularité du personnel" means the company shall observe the social legislation governing the regulatory working time (better still, conditions) of persons employed in the premises/company.
philgoddard May 20, 2010:
The context is in the asker's previous question: "Société garantit le respect de la législation sociale en matière de régularité du personnel amené à travailler dans un établissement ..."

please post a full sentence in French to show the actual context. What country is it from?

social welfare legislation

Hello,

Going on Phil's definition...

Also, I'm not so sure it'd be "employment legislation" as that is usually "législation du travail"

disagree Rob Grayson : Nothing to do with social welfare IMO // I never said it was an outrageous guess, I just didn't agree it was the best translation. "Social legislation" is not the same as "social welfare legislation".

Why not? Explain yourself. They go hand in hand. See links. "Social welfaire legislation" deals with work conditions, legality of employees, etc." I don't think this is an outrageous guess. I'm not sure what is best. I will be very humble about my answer
agree Charlesp : I would have said this too.

Thank you, Charlesp! I don't see much of a difference with this to "social legislation". It's a very vague, or "generic" term, if you like.

labour legislation

a bit more general and generic
Peer comment(s):

agree X2010 : as you say, "general and generic", though I do think it refers specifically to work time legislation. No harm in the generic term "social legislation" either.
