Law/Patents - Law (general) / Fairy tales and court cases
French term or phrase: précepte normatif
This document from a university lecturer in law compares fairy tales with court judgements. From France.

Although "précepte normatif" can be simply translated as normative precept, this doesn't seem very helpful. Standardising principle/prescriptive principle?

Any suggestions welcome.

un précepte normatif
a standard (story)line; a ritual rule of thumb

Explanation:
Perhaps standard rather than standardising principle...

Rule-making, legislative and regulatory don't really work for the normatif part, nor (sales) pitch or mantra for précepte.

The opinion in point may be true of French, but not necessarily British court judgments that UK Solicitors complain about as being unpredictable and whimsical.

No need for the usual culprits to reword my answer..
