Not a specialist of the field and not a native English speaker, but in midwifery/obgyn context, the french word "toucher" always refers to "toucher vaginal" which seems to correspond to "vaginal touch" (although I have also seen the term "vaginal palpation" which seems mostly used in the context of pelvic muscle strenght exercises).

I think the context here would be checking vaginal dilatation during pregnancy or labor. That's why I believe vaginal touch to be the correct translation in this case.

Of course "toucher" also refers to other kinds of palpations. However in this context, this seems like a reasonable interpretation.
And the fact that the original text simply read "toucher" and not "toucher vaginal" is also coherent with that interpretation.
