Back Pain
"Les travaux de X ***ont permis de montrer*** que la pression intradiscale augmente considérablement en position assise."
From a text about low back pain. Somehow, the "ont permis" bit doesn't quite seem to fit here. I'm actually leaning towards something like "have shown", because that makes more sense than "have allowed it to be shown/proven/demonstrated". Surely the works themselves have shown this fact than allowed it to be shown!
If I just said "have shown", would that be faithful to the source text? Otherwise, what would be a good solution here? TIA for your help.

Comment: "Hervé gets the points here mainly for his very helpful note, which enlightened me on the interesting French use of "permettre". Thanks also to the others who provided similar enlightenment, and to everyone who contributed in some way. Appreciate everyone's help."

have demonstrated
YOU're on the right track. Your attempt with "have allowed to prove"would be fine. OR you could simply as you sensed it, say: "have demonstrated that.

that French "permettre" is always a sticky one.
