The first thing that comes to mind is the title of one of Tennessee Williams' last plays, "Vieux Carré." The phrase literally means "old square," but it is almost universally synonymous with the French Quarter area in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Oddly enough, the phrase is mistranslated in official documents describing the riverfront development plan of the City of Peoria, Illinois: "The area, formerly known as 'Old Town South,' was just recently renamed 'The Vieux Carre,' French for 'small quarters' [sic]."

Overall, though, Karin is right: without more context, one could spend hours researching all the possible equivalents and their nuances.

The term means old square. The old square being paved with " pavés ".
I think in terms of endearment you could translate something along the lines of old rock or rock solid
