Non-PRO French to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature detective novel
the character here is visited late at night while he was slleping. We may think that he's quite angry. But I don't understant the term "considéra" in this sentence. It has not the same meaning as in "il le considéra comme son meilleur ami". Do you think the use of the verb "regarder" here could be appropriated?

He gazed at him with his big blue eyes

You could also say looked, studied, contemplated etc etc. It all depends on your context and the tone of your text

Merci Jean Pierre
neutral Tony M : I think "gazed", in association with "big blue eyes", probably has an unsuitable connotation that is not in keeping with the story so far...

Good point, Tony. I didn't know that we were talking about an unwelcome guest when I made this suggestion

French term (edited): il le considéra...

he looked him up and down... / he regarded him...

Could be a nice way of rendering the "added value" contributed by the original choice of verb in FR.

"considérer" often translates best as "to regard", and indeed, that would also fit quite well here

agree katsy : ummm - at the risk of getting 'told off', I get the impression we're doing someone's homework here. Is that OK?

Thanks, Katsy! Well, it IS OK — as long as Asker declares it! Let's be charitable and assume this is just personal reading, and not a university assignment...
