"Jouvet et al noted that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), a serotonin precursor, is released at axonal nerve endings in the basal hypothalamus as a neurotransmitter during waking. Thus, it may act as a neurohormone and induce hypnogenic factors that are secondarily responsible for slow wave and REM sleep.
