French term or phrase: arête
Can anyone think what to call this 'arête'? Ridge or edge don't seem right. It's the extra section running across the top of the frame in photos 1 and 2 here: http://www.arkostudio.com/gallery/newton-gravity-bike/ (click on > for other photos)

Gravity bike designed by three design students as a course assignment. Text is for a general audience, not necessarily bike techies:

Tant qu’à s’amuser, ils optent pour un gravity bike, un vélo de descente sans pédale inspiré des proportions des ‘cafe racers’ (motos des années 60-70 dont le guidon se trouve au niveau du phare). Et pour des profils en acier en losange, qu’ils utilisent avec une arête sur le haut du cadre.

I see that crossbar is given as a synonym for top tube in Gert's link, so this works well as a concise translation of the whole phrase (une arête sur le haut du cadre) cf. photos here http://tinyurl.com/lertnws. Thanks, everyone.

agree  Chris Maddux: From what I have found on bike diagrams that is what it is normally called a top tube.. http://ds-customs.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderp...
