French term

Une ceinture à revers

French to English Marketing Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Hello

Probably also described as

item of clothing +***ceinturé à revers***

Looked at loads of pictures and think it might be some sort of elastic waistband, probably with a pull string in the back

Not always visible in the picture but very visible and with magnifying glass on the page

http://www.esprit.fr/pantalon-ceinturé-à-revers-053CC1B037

is this what it is and what might be the English term please?

Thanks

Posted Thank you for your generosity, Lorraine and Philippa :-)
Lorraine Dubuc Nov 14, 2013:
I encourage Sheri to post her suggestion :-)
Philippa Smith Nov 14, 2013:
Agree with Sheri and Lorraine and was about to post "fold-over waist" - both waist and waistband get a ton of Ghits...you should post it Sheri.
Lorraine Dubuc Nov 14, 2013:
foldover waistband makes sense (ceinture à revers sounds like reversible belt which has little to do with waistband. I guess it was misinterpreted in the first place... On parle davantage de rabat à la taille voir lien: http://www.boutiquepassiondanse.com/femmes/919-jupe-davedans...

See link with image of fold over waistband: http://www.sears.ca/product/calvin-klein-swim-bottom-with-fo...
SafeTex (asker) Nov 14, 2013:
@ all Hello Catherine and Philippa

The text is 'ceinture à revers and I now know it is for a bikini bottom where there is no belt in the everday sense.
Someone has looked at the picture and has now told me that they can only see (or suppose), that there is an elastic band in the bikini bottom

I've also found

http://www.mondefile.com/fr/jupes-createur-mode/191-jupe-cou...

with 5 images including front and back and once again, can not see a belt in the classical sense.

Do you have enough to 'save' me now cos I'm having a horrible day

Thanks
Philippa Smith Nov 14, 2013:
As the others said, your link is talking about belted trousers that turn up, you can see them on the English Esprit site ("turn-up trousers + belt"):
http://www.esprit.co.uk/turn-up-trousers-belt-083CC1B073
So if your text has clothes that are "ceinturé à revers" then they're belted and can be turned up. If the "ceinture à revers" is actually used, maybe it says "avec ceinture à revers"? Meaning, in descriptive shorthand, with a belt and with turn-ups.
Sheri P Nov 14, 2013:
à revers The "à revers" in the image you provided the link for appears to refer to the fact that the pants can be "cuffed," i.e., the legs can be rolled up and fastened with the buttons you see on the lower leg portion. So, for that image at least, "à revers" refers to the pants and not the belt.
Catharine Cellier-Smart Nov 14, 2013:
"ceinturé" ou "une ceinture"? Is your question "ceinturé à revers" ou "Une ceinture à revers"? It's not quite the same thing.

foldover waistband/waist

As noted in the discussion entries, the term is being used to describe a bikini bottom that doesn't contain a "belt" in the usual sense of that word.

It appears to be referrring to what is usually called a "foldover" waist or waistband, as in the images below.

Here's a site in French that shows a bikini bottom with a "ceinture à revers"

thank you, Lori!
agree Philippa Smith : and looking at all those bikini pics reminds us how we won't be wearing one for many months now!!

yes, sadly :-)
agree Catcressie

thanks, Catcressie!
disagree Janice Giffin : The photo in the website of the original question the 'Pantalon ceinturé à revers' is a long pair of casual cargo type trousers with a belt that looks like it is turned inside out. I see no reference to a bikini. Have I missed something?

Yes. It's in the D box. The "pantalon ceinturé à revers" in asker's link refers to "belted pants that can be rolled up." But asker's text actually concerns a bikini bottom w/o a belt, and the term needed is "ceinture à revers," not "ceinturé à revers."
agree Lorraine Dubuc : Janice if you look at my links it is clearly fold over waistband.
