"Sans fixation visible, ces petites boucles d’oreilles donnent l’impression qu’elles flottent sur le lobe. Comme avec les pin’s, c’est une tige traversant l’oreille qui maintient les choses en place, le tout chapeauté par un fermoir de l’autre côté."

Note that earrings can fasten at the back without being studs, e.g. creole earrings, which clip into a hook at the back. (The discussion about sleepers was simply a digression brought about by the reference to railway sleepers.) The point about "traversant" is that these are earrings for pierced ears that pass through the ear lobe before fastening at the back.

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: "fermoir" is a NOUN and sleepers come as studs (close at back a clue??) as well as hoops

-> The fact that it is expressed in French by using the noun "fermoir" doesn't mean that construction has to be slavishly followed in English. the earrings concerned aren't necessarily sleepers (that was a digression); they are also not necessarily studs.
