Explanation:
I don't think this is a French concept. It is used in NZ and Australia - I'm not sure about the UK - where the labels on alcoholic beverages indicate the alcohol content per unit of consumption. Can't remember the exact wording, but from memory it is something vague and variable, such that the measure is not the same for wine as for spirits or beer.
Check out a few labels, assuming you have firewater in the house!
