Social Sciences - History / 19th century French working class history
French term or phrase: peuple/ populaire
An old and always annoying question, how to translate peuple into German that doesn't immediately have a whiff of National Socialism and chauvinism. I am currently translating a work on early 19th century working class history, where peuple and populaire are continuously used to designate the "working people", and I haven't yet hit on a satisfactory translation. "Volk" definitely doesn't work, and "völkisch" even less. But "populär" is not it either, and I simply cannot substitute with "Arbeiter(-)"... I'd really be grateful for suggestions!
