Der Sinn ist klar, aber mir fällt grad keine deutsche Entsprechung (bin schon zu lange dran, der Kopf will nicht mehr...)?

Explanation:
...überlebt nur der Schein/die Moral, aber nicht die Tugend

"Erst kommt das Fressen, dann kommt die Moral", fällt mir dazu noch ein, aber das scheint inhaltlich wohl nicht so ganz zu passen.
