French term or phrase: l'explosion va se centraliser
A writer is interviewing an sculptor:
Interviewer: "Evidemment, apres avoir casse des violons et des saxophones, tu as casse des luths cette fois et tu t'es amuse"
Sculptor: "Oui, ca m'a fait plaisir, et c'est une composition reussie, il y a quatre luths dont l'explosion va se centraliser et c'est tres romantique, trop joli peut etre mais il faut de temps en temps un soupir".
Does anyone understand what he means by "l'explosion va se centraliser" (whatever you think of this type of art!)?
Thanks, Karen

English translation:the explosion of the fours lutes will make it hang together
Explanation:
This sounds a bit "arty-farty". Let's have a serious-fun stab at this one !

"aller (present indicative) + infinitive" often used colloquially to mean "end up + -ing". Here's what I mean :

Sculptor: "Yes, I had fun doing it and the composition has worked out well/has come off. The explosion of four lutes will end up centralising the whole thing/bringing it all together/will bring it all together nicely. Very romantic, bit pretty-pretty maybe but you have to breathe from time to time".

Howzat?

Nikki

Good luck with the rest of it.

Yes, this phrase is definitely artsy-fartsy and seems to confuse everyone. My French friend wouldn't even take a stab at it. I hadn't thought of your idea about the explosion making the whole thing (for want of a better word) hang together but it sounds good to me! Definitely not my kind of art; not only does he break instruments, he burns them, too. All the comments gave me something to think about, and I had fun reading them. Thanks to everyone. Karen

4 lutes will explode

Explanation:
Karen,
pas facile!
If I got it right, he creates his sculptures by blowing musical instruments up or breaking them into pieces. Check if this fits your context. Based on that interpretation, you can say this time he will "compose" his new sculpture by blowing up/having four lutes explode. And he enjoys it and finds it romantic....
Anyway, I think it refers to that.
Good luck!

If you understand anything else in this sentence, you've got a head start on me.

Explanation:
I'm something of an artist myself and I know for certain that, as behooves the profession, I'm cracked; but I have a hard time getting the point across as clearly as this sculptor does.

May I suggest you just translate the tidbit literally and fit it into the sentence, then roll it around in your mouth while imagining the beautiful pile of splinters this sculptor has created, and then maybe some meaning will start to glimmer through. At that point you might see, for example, the sound of the explosion in the spaces between the splinters, and the spaces are all unified, centralizing the work or bringing it back together.

Hope it helps, Karen, but wouldn't you rather stick to the social sciences?

There are four lutes where the explosion will be centered

Explanation:
and that's very romantic, too pretty perhaps, but from time to time a sigh is necessary...
Dear Karen,
I know I gave up on this before but I couldn't resist it. "Lutes" and "romantic" give a certain interpretative key. In early 19th century painting (the Romantic period precisely) musical instruments were used to symbolize hearing when painting allegorically about the five senses. Lutes were particularly associated with the Middle East and North Africa (the odalisque paintings), which were favored as exotic subjects. See if this atmosphere fits into the image the sculptor wants to project, so as to suggest a reading. (Art-historical allusions, artists do this all the time).
