French to English translations [Non-PRO] Art/Literary
French term or phrase:air blase
le troisième s’est affalé sur un siège, tel un pantin sans vie, dont l’air blasé ou ailleurs n’est pas loin de le faire ressembler à un masque.
Explanation: I have often seen the word "blasé" used in English, because... well... it means what it means! Not quite the same as "indifferent". More like someone who has seen it all, done it all, possesses it all and has lost interest. But it is more than "uninterested". It means the interest was there before but has been lost through that person having been spoiled by abundance. I think I would use that French word.
Explanation: As in, "The third one had collapsed on a seat like a lifeless puppet, with a jaded or distracted expression that was almost masklike." -- Not quite a literal rendering, but one that avoids the problems you'd get into if you tried for an exact duplication of the syntax (which, in the French, is slightly tortured...). -- HTH, HC
