French term or phrase: demi-cercle allonge
La table est dressée en un demi-cercle allongé, au centre d’une immense salle.... I can't quite make out the shape of this table....is it like an oblong shape with rounded ends?

stretched-out semi-circle or elongated semi-circle or horse-shoe shape
Explanation:
No, I don't think it is an oblong table. I would rather see it as a very long table that circles around the room and is open at one end. People sit on the outside of that circle, facing everybody else. In medieval times, for instance, entertainers could then move in that semi-circle and perform for the guests who would all be able to see the show.

Thanks! This one was very tricky as I was describing paintings without being able to actually see the painting (but, as we know, this type of thing always happens in translation!). All the suggestions were very helpful.

elongated semicircle

Explanation:
This is the literal translation but if you elongate a semicircle it stops being a semicircle and you would have a different geometrical figure (a semielliptical figure)

Explanation:
Here it would probably be best to recast the sentence. "The long, semi-circular table sat in the center of a huge room..." -- HTH, HC
