Du plus loin que je me souvienne, j'ai entendu la mer. Mêlé au vent dans les aiguilles des filaos, au vent qui ne cesse pas, même lorsqu'on s'éloigne des rivages ... Beginning of the book "Le chercheur d'or" by J.M.G. Le Clézio. Does anybody where the word "filao" comes from? Is it portuguese? Thanks a lot!

Filao is a desertic plant which one can find in Africa, Australia, Extreme Orient etc. In English you can translate as it is "filaos". Lengkuan is the Malay word for the root known in English, Spanish and German as galangol; it is otherwise known as filaos (fr. Indonesia).
