French term or phrase: mutations
rapidité des changements dans le cadre des profondes mutations que se prépare à vivre la distribution europénne

English translation:shifts; alterations; changes
Explanation:
The problem with translating your sentence is that "mutation" really means "change", but you already have that in the same sentence, and really can't drop it, because it is part of a "phrase faite" in English. Here are some suggestions (the ones in square brackets seem less desirable to me):

speed of change, as distribution in Europe gets ready to switch gears/make a sharp shift [undergo deep change/alteration/]

Thanks very much for your help. I'd been turning the sentence round in my head all night!

speed of adaptation

Explanation:
within the framework of the profound changes that European distribution (systems)are preparing to face.

OR

within the context of the profound changes expected to occur in European distribution (systems).

Given the problem pointed out by Yolanda, I would prefer 'adaptation' first, as 'profound change' is a standard collocation, suitable in the second part. The implication is that the changes occur and somebody/something 'adapts' to these. Note the addition of 'systems', necessary in the interest of precision.

Mutations has a "genetic" ring to it, but it can convey the meaning.

Explanation:
Specially in the [Darwinian] sense of adaptations to a new [economical] environment.

Mutations; Adaptations; Adjustments.
