Derek, Explanation: I would not even say, "Vous etes sur la boite vocale..." at the beginning of your sentence. It is understood that it is the boite vocale; people are so used to it... I live in Canada and all the recorded messages are at least bilingual, including mine. Keep it short. I would start "Je ne suis pas ... I would also take out "n'hesitez pas..." Repondeur Explanation: A boite vocale is, as far as I know, only what is known as a "voice mailbox" - basically the thing people calling your mobil/cell phone leave messages on. Using boite vocale might confuse people calling you into thinking they'd dialled your mobile instead of your fixed line phone. I would say that the first solution would be more used than your option but that is only for the two following reasons and if you do not feel they concern you, then you solution is the best one : - people do know that they are either talking to you or to a "boite vocale" or a "répondeur", it is usually considered that precising you have one, while obvious, means you are only showing off or that you take your customers/ friends for a bunch of idiots - it is a bit cold and off-putting, less direct or welcoming. It is said that if they do not hear 'you are tuned to an answering system', people tend to stay to the end of your message in the hope that there will be an other number at which they will be able to contact you direct and therefore, usually end up leaving you a message. boite vocale/repondeur Explanation: Boite Vocale is also used for non mobile/non cell phones. For example, Bell Canada offers a Boite Vocale service, in which you don't have to own a repondeur. You just buy the service from Bell Canada and you access your boite vocale without having the piece of hardware sitting on your desk. Répondeur Explanation: "Boite vocale" is more Canadian than European and we usually refer to "Répondeur". However most French messages refer to neither but will state: " Vous avez rejoint le domicile de .... Pourriez-vous me laisser un message...." If the answering machine is at work: "Vous avez rejoint le bureau de .... I have never heard the word messagerie used in that context as it refers to manual or automated answering service Hope this help.
