French term or phrase: actionnaire de reference
Presentation d'une societe de capital management.
Documents requis: - rapport annuel 2000 de la societe de gestion, a defaut de son actionnaire de reference (ADR).
English translation:majority shareholder (main, top, etc.)
Explanation:
I did extensive Internet research on this term last week and found sites in French and English in which the "actionnaire de reference" was referred to in the above terms. Any adjective connoting "leading" would be okay, especially for a journalistic translation, but I think "majority" would be the appropriate register for your document. I don't remember the Web sites I looked at anymore, but I believe I wrote "actionnaire de reference" next to "exact phrase" in Google and asked for English-language sites. I also entered the name of the top shareholder of a certain company plus the company name to see how the shareholder was referred to. Karen

or maybe controlling shareholder

As you can tell, these are homemade suggestions based what I take to be the meaning of the phrase; someone else might know if there's a standard term.
