French term or phrase: délai de carence
When an employee has to stop working for incapacity reasons (accident, illness, ...), the social security system covers the employee and pays for the equivalent salary during the period of incapacity.

Nevertheless, the social security doesn't pay for the salary over the period of the 3 first day of this period.

This period of three days is designated in French by "délai de carence". Would you have any suggestion to translate this into English ?

Many thanks

waiting time/period; qualifying period

Explanation:
This is the definition given in The Council of Europe French-English Legal Dictionary (which I have found to be very reliable):

"waiting time (period during which an insurer does not pay compensation); waiting period; qualifying period"

qualifying period

Explanation:
In my view, qualifying period is most suitable as it describes succintly what is actually is, viz, a period of time you have to wait in order to qualify for benefit.

A - délai de carence = period of grace (financial context)

Example 1 :

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/fr/lif/dat/1994/fr_294A0103_39....

3. Il est prévu un délai de carence de deux ans avant que ne débute le remboursement du principal, par tranches égales.

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1994/en_294A0103_39....

3. There shall be a period of grace of two years before repayment, in equal tranches, of capital commences.

Example 2 :

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/fr/lif/dat/1999/fr_399D0143.htm...

La garantie en faveur de Favahe a été donnée en décembre 1992 pour une période de sept ans assortie d'un délai de carence de deux ans.

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1999/en_399D0143.htm...

The guarantee in favour of Favahe was granted in December 1992 for a period of seven years with a two-year grace period.

Waiting period,qualifying period

Explanation:
In a multilingual insurance dictionary that term was given as Waiting period=délai de carence.
German: Karenzfirst.
ýn another multilingual Period of partial benefit, qualifying period, time of partial benefit.
But this partial benefit perhaps not fit ?

qualifying period/ period of eligibility (for benefit )

Explanation:
It also translates as 'waiting period'

Another option: pre-qualifying period.

Check the second like it is extremely good.

1 day 10 hrs
waiting period

Explanation:
this seems to be the most likely answer. the site below is a canadian govt site in both english and french and you will see that délai de carence is a paragraph heading at the very beginning of the document.
