French term or phrase: bavards et entendants
This is in document describing several tests on a ship control system to check if all is working right.
These terms are used for several items:

Les simulateurs sont démarrés, bavards et entendants.
Les cabinets de contrôle sont démarrés, bavards et entendants.

These are just lines stated in Excel cells so i can't say much more apart from the fact that all the equipment is part of a centralised control system.

speaking and listening

Explanation:
There's not much you can do with this if you have no context. "Talkative and hearing" would sound weird, but if you say "speaking and listening" the customer will at least understand, and be able to insert their preferred terminology if necessary.

disagree  Daryo: you misinterpreted "bavards" et "entendants" - these are nouns describing the actors/agents (devices), not their actions => the "talkers" (simulator / devices that "talk" - send data) and the "listeners" (simulators that wait to receive data/signals)/ YES

agree  writeaway: I am just agreeing with you because your suggestion was paraphrased: "talkers" and "listeners"

able to both send and receive data

Explanation:
A generalised solution fitting for a lack of context in the source text.

disagree  Daryo: there is enough context: in a bog standard control system some parts are sending data other are receiving data // there is no reason whatsoever to assume that ALL components are bidirectional. Sensors send data only one way, etc...

data senders and data receivers // "talkers" and "listeners"

Explanation:
signal senders / signal receivers

testing devices used for sending or receiving data/signals

or to reuse the figure of style from the ST:

"talkers" and "listeners"

IOW some of the "simulateurs" are of the "bavards" type (= send signals) - while others are of the "entendants" (= type listen for/receive these signals).

BTW: there are ZERO ghits for "bavards et entendants" so the meaning has to be extrapolated from the usual methods for testing control systems using "simulators".

... of the "entendants" type (=listen for/receive these signals).

-> well, if for you "speaking" and "speaker" is the same, no further comments ... when I want to listen to music I go to a shop to buy a "speaker", you go to buy a "speaking"?
