French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / Trenchless Techniques for underground pipelines
French term or phrase: fonçage par fusée pneumatique
I'm translating a document on Trenchless techniques for the installation underground pipelines.

You'd be surprised how much confusion is exists concerning these terms so please be vigilent with you replies and if possible try to answer all the terms (which will be asked separately)

Here's the text I have to resolve, but I haven't found broad consensus on the specific English (UK) terms. I do have a pretty good idea what there are but would like confirmation. I'd rather not expose my ideas so as not to unduly influence anyone.

Il existe quatre techniques de fonçage:

- le fonçage par fusée pneumatique ,
- le fonçage par battage,
- le fonçage par rotation (ou à la tarière),
- le fonçage par poussée.

From barbara's superb ref.
IMPACT MOLING Method of creating a bore using a pneumatic or hydraulic hammer within a casing, generally of torpedo shape. The term is usually associated with non- steered or limited steering devices without rigid attachment to the launch pit, relying upon the resistance of the ground for forward movement. During the operation the soil is displaced, not removed. An unsupported bore may be formed in suitable ground, or a pipe drawn in or pushed in behind the impact moling tool. Cables may also be drawn in.

agree  xxxBourth: With "pneumartic" you can prob. dispense with your hammer, Maxwell.

fusée pneumatique
pipe bursting

Explanation:
When you have an existing pipe and wish to replace it with one of the same or a larger diameter.

Kiwipedia says:

Battage de tubes Pipe ramming (percussive=pneumatic) (cf. Fonçage de tubes)

Fonçage (covers both battage (pneumatic) and fonçage de tubes (hydraulic), qv.). Trenchless pipelaying (opp. of trenchless can be "open cut" [TTI,9/2001,p.35; 7/2000,p.18).

Fonçage à la fusée Pipe bursting (in one context, at least), burstlining [TTI,7/2000,p.20]

Fonçage à la tarière Horizontal auger boring (HAB). Aka ~ par rotation

Fonçage de tubes Pipe jacking (originally confined to steel pipes. A/c to Blake [32/11], thrust boring is a development of pipe jacking applied to concrete culverts, etc., but in practice people speak of "jacking" (cf. jacked box tunnelling [TTI,1/00,p.41]) (cf. Battage de tubes, Fonçage, Poussage de tubes); thrust boring; also either jacking or ramming.

Fonçage par rotation Horizontal auger boring (HAB) Aka ~ à la tarière

Poussage de tubes Both pipe jacking and ramming (if pneumatique, = ramming; if hydraulique = jacking)

In the case of laying new pipes (i.e. not pipe bursting), then "impact moling", as suggested, also "pneumatic punching".

disagree  B D Finch: According to the description and picture on http://www.ukstt.org.uk/trenchless_technology/replacement_te... pipe bursting is a way of getting an existing pipe out of the way (by bursting it into the surrounding ground) in order to replace it.
