French to English translations [Non-PRO] Social Sciences - Education / Pedagogy / certificates
French term or phrase:ajourné
A baccalaureat certificate.
We have a list of the subjects and marks.
The columns are as follows:
Matière Note/bareme Session Crédits
Résulat d'admission Ajourné
Not really sure what has been deferred (if that is indeed the meaning)
Explanation: Larousse def. of "Ajourné": un candidat à un examen renvoyé à une session d'examen ultérieure.
Petit Robert: un candidat renvoyé à une session d'examen ultérieure. refusé, recalé, retorqué.
This expression means indeed that the candidate failed at this particular exam. However, the French have specific words for "failed", which were not used in this particular sentence.
In that case, it could just be to indicate that the candidate will need to take another exam at a later date.

Failed the 200n session - deferred
Explanation: I think this could be where the student has already passed some Bac subjects in Première (last but one year), then did the others in Terminale (the last year). This is quite common, especially for the French exam.
So, s/he hasn't passed the Bac this year, and is not entitled to do the Rattrapage as the mark was too low, BUT the marks for the subjects that have already been passed still count for another year so s/he does not need to retake these subjects.
However, if s/he fails next year it's back to square one in all subjects - most give up at that stage!
