French term or phrase: puits de permutation
Again part of a list of requirements in this underground system. The "puits de permutation" lead off or are part of the power junction chambers. TIA.

switching pit
Explanation:
Not so much a guess as invention!

Not something I've everh come across either, and it gets a pitiful number of ghits, half of which refer to your question!

THen there's this:

Il n’est pas prévu de transformateur sur le trajet de ce câble, mais simplement des regards de surveillance et des “PUITS DE PERMUTATION”, qui seraient constitués d’une simple dalle de béton au ras du sol.

Somehow it appears to be connected to transformers - could a place where cable connections can be switched around substitute for a transformer? In the case of a wind farm, maybe connecting different turbines to the outgoing cable steps the voltage up or down ...

However I'd have thought anything like that, if such a thing exists, would be a bit of high-tech wizardry, not something plonked in the ground under a concrete slab.

"Switchover" pit might get you away from the aspect of mechanical "switching".

Notes to answerer
Asker: As the puits de terre is earthing pit then switching pit is certainly possible. By the way, your high tech wizadry is spot on, I'm just finishing one of the Harry Potter books before heading for the land of nod. Not quite sure how big the switches light be for 90,000 volts and beaucoup des ampères. Thanks for the reply, i'll kep you informed.

Asker: This is in fact a hole in the ground into which are fed cables from the main power cable screens. I presume that they interconnect the 3 power cables in different combinations to reduce the electromagnetic radiation. So its not actually a switch as such, but crossover is not quite right either.

Asker: Switchover sounds good. I'll inform client but I think he has enough on his plate with what I've done. The word doc referred to an in-house modele that I did not have. Result having gone through the beast carrying out tracked changes, every time I closed down and restarted it undid all the changes! Such is life. TTFN Chris.
